Coincidences
It is amazing how coincidences happen.  Last Friday evening we stopped to get some petrol in Ingleton , North Yorks and we ran into the mum of an ex student of ours who left some years ago. Nick Almond went to university  and gained a degree in psychology and who is now a PhD. The remarkable thing about this young man is that he is severely physically disabled, finding mobility and speech almost impossible. Nick always was a determined person and it was a privilege to watch him pass through the school, go to university and become so successful. A few days later I heard about a web site developed by a student called Nathan Popple who himself is disabled. It’s concerned with accessibility in Leeds. Nathan has graded venues, shops and cafes according to their accessibility for wheelchair users. You can imagine it has caused quite a stir. In actual fact the media has got hold of it so its been in the papers and I’ve heard that he’ll be on television. Gregg Mulholland has presented a parliamentary motion congratulating him. How good is that!
Now you won’t believe this but I’m sat here in the school reception  (6:05 pm on Thursday evening) typing up my blog and who comes through the door but Ben Cropper who I haven’t seen for months and months.  In his final year at university and hoping to get into journalism, wanting to do some work at the paralympics later this year, Ben too is one of our ex disabled students.
Our school has a proud history of working with young people who have a physical disability. They are a source of constant inspiration and pride.
On Wednesday of this week it was our Option and Consultation Evening for our Y9 student. It was a great turn out with a really positive feel.  Many thanks to all staff who were involved but especially so to Georgina Drew for organising the evening for her year group and Angela Caswell for doing the presentations.  Oh and finally thanks to all the students who were involved in making the video that was shown. It was great.
Finally a reminder that next Friday is a Training Day so school finishes for half term for our students on Thursday 9th February.

P1070598Following the series of successful ski/snowboard trips over the past few years, I am planning to organise another in 2013.

I have made a provisional booking with Interski for the Hotel Valdotain, Aosta, Northern Italy. The ski area that we will be using is Pila which has a mixture of wide open pistes and tracks well suited to beginner and intermediates.

London Trip PDF Print E-mail

IMG_0180On 2nd December 2011 Miss Shilton & Mr Ward took 12 students down to London to visit the Houses of Parliament. It was an early start; meeting at Leeds Train Station at 6:30am in time for a McDonalds’ breakfast! Everyone arrived in good time and all were dressed to impress, Ramsy even came equipped with a brief case, supporting very important documents, namely the Sun newspaper!
The students travelled on the Tube like native Londoners, calling at Oxford circus to visit the famous Hamley’s toy store, before cruising down Bond Street to the next station.
We stopped off to see the London eye and walked round Big Ben towards security at the Black Rod Garden Gate Entrance to meet Lord Anthony St. John, who inherited his position in the Houses of Parliament because he is a life peer.
The students discovered that all the laws of the land are kept in Victoria Tower and if that were to blow up or be destroyed we would lose all the Acts of Parliament ever created.
Mr Ward was particularly excited about the ‘real piece of history’ that we saw which was the Death Warrant for King Charles I. He was charged with Treason and there was a command on his head.
The students were informed that phrases such as; ‘It’s in the bag’, ‘Tow the line’; and ‘Stab you in the back’ all originated from inside the House of Commons.

warhorseWar Horse (The Film) Steven Spielberg reviewed by 9B2

Yesterday 18th January 2012 9B2 took a trip to Vue Cinema Leeds to watch War Horse with Miss Drew and Mr Smith.
All of the pupils got on the Number1 bus to town. We all queued to buy our tickets, some of us got 2for1 if we had an orange network.  We all got settled into our seats (Not VIP I might add!) eating our refreshments.   All of 9B2 had a set task to jot down ideas about the actors, characters, special effects or music in the film.
Jeremy Irvine plays the character Albert, this was his first film and I’ve got to admit he was fantastic! In the film he gets very attached to Joey, his horse, when he gets sold to the army at the start of World War I, Albert got very emotional.   Jeremy Irvine played that part very well, his performance was very believable. The movie was brilliant, it was quite sad at times but it was thrilling to watch especially the part where Joey races through No-mans land and gets tangled up in barbed wire…
The question on everyone’s lips was ‘Does Albert get re-united with Joey and survive the trenches?’  I guess you’ll have to see it to find out…
Year 9 gave this fantastic film a whooping 8 out of 10!
