Headteacher

Well three days gone, the summer hols are well and truly over and this my first blog of the new school year.
Despite a superb holiday visiting my youngest son in Thailand I am pleased to get started and it has been great seeing all the staff and students especially those new to the school. A particularly warm welcome to new members of our staff team – Eve Shilton, Vicky Hepworth and Stewart McGill all working in Maths; Dave Mulvaney Assistant Area Leader in Science and Gaynor Mairs and Laura Slater who both join our team of support professionals.
The start of term has gone well and today we begin our timetabled lessons. Hopefully we will get into the routine quickly but it will, in reality, take another week or so I suspect.
I have been delighted over the events of the summer. Our exam results were very good. I am really delighted (and relieved) at the way they have turned out.  This is the product of a good deal of hard work from students, staff and, I suspect, families as well. Many thanks to you all
A great deal of decoration and refurbishment has taken place in and around the building as part of the PFI contract but I do have to say that the site staff have worked very hard over the break to get the building looking so good.

Year 8 Options Information
Written by A Caswell
optionsAs your son/daughter moves into Year 9 we are recommending a learning pathway to each student based on our judgement about what sort of courses would lead them to the greatest success at Key Stage 4.  The different learning pathways are described in more detail below and further information will be available at the Y9 options events which will be held next year in January and February.

Red Pathway

Some students have a very broad range of aptitude, well developed study skills and the ability to cope well with a high academic workload.  To fulfil their aptitudes such students may need to extend their studies.  Therefore the Red pathway provides a core curriculum and the opportunity to study four option subjects.  Students taking this pathway will be expected to choose a language since this is important for many professional careers.  They will also be invited to apply to study Triple Science qualification in this pathway and there are possibilities for early entry in some subjects.

Students taking the Red pathway will work towards twelve GCSE’s at Level 2.
This pathway will provide a good basis for progression to Advanced level education after year 11.

Orange Pathway

The majority of students need success in a broad range of subjects taken at GCSE or equivalent level.  Therefore the Orange pathway provides a core curriculum and the opportunity to study up to three option subjects, one of which will be a BTEC Level 2 or Diploma qualification. Students taking this pathway are also strongly recommended to choose a language since this is important for many professional careers.  They will also be invited to apply to study a Triple Science qualification in this pathway and there are possibilities for early entry in some subjects.

Students taking the Orange pathway will work towards up to ten GCSE’s at Level 2 plus a BTEC Level 2 qualification (equivalent to a further 4 GCSE’s).
This pathway will provide a good basis for progression to Advanced level education after year 11

Yellow Pathway

Some students benefit from a less academic curriculum. The Yellow pathway provides an alternative with a stronger focus on practical activities and study support.  Students taking this pathway will have the opportunity to gain GCSE or equivalent qualifications in English, Maths, Science, RE and ICT.  There will be a strong vocational emphasis and students will choose up to two further GCSE options alongside a Level 1 vocational qualification. (Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE up to grade D. Level 2 is equivalent to grade C or above at GCSE.)

This pathway will provide a good basis for progression after year 11 into work, further education, or work based training.

Green pathway

Some students benefit from a less academic curriculum. The Green pathway provides an alternative with a stronger focus on practical activities, study support, and directly work related courses.  There will be a strong vocational emphasis and some time will be spent in work based or work related college based placements.

Students taking this pathway will have the opportunity to gain GCSE or equivalent qualifications in English, Maths, Science, RE and ICT.  Students should in addition expect to gain other nationally recognised qualifications at level 1 or level 2.
(Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE up to grade D. Level 2 is equivalent to grade C or above at GCSE.)

This pathway will provide a good basis for progression after year 11 into work, further education, or work based training.
