Headteacher

Well three days gone, the summer hols are well and truly over and this my first blog of the new school year.
Despite a superb holiday visiting my youngest son in Thailand I am pleased to get started and it has been great seeing all the staff and students especially those new to the school. A particularly warm welcome to new members of our staff team – Eve Shilton, Vicky Hepworth and Stewart McGill all working in Maths; Dave Mulvaney Assistant Area Leader in Science and Gaynor Mairs and Laura Slater who both join our team of support professionals.
The start of term has gone well and today we begin our timetabled lessons. Hopefully we will get into the routine quickly but it will, in reality, take another week or so I suspect.
I have been delighted over the events of the summer. Our exam results were very good. I am really delighted (and relieved) at the way they have turned out.  This is the product of a good deal of hard work from students, staff and, I suspect, families as well. Many thanks to you all
A great deal of decoration and refurbishment has taken place in and around the building as part of the PFI contract but I do have to say that the site staff have worked very hard over the break to get the building looking so good.

A Question of Taste
Written by C Poulter
SNV32435_450x338On the 28th April, a group of 6th form science students set off bright and early on a trip to the Nowgen centre for genetics in Manchester. Feeling very professional in our white lab coats and bright purple gloves we started the day by tasting two seemingly innocent strips of paper, one of which provoked complaints of a disgusting taste from some of the group whilst the rest of us couldn’t taste a thing. This was followed by more nasty tastes when we had to gargle salty water to extract some DNA from our cheeks! Taste was the theme for the day- we were investigating a chemical called PCT which is responsible for the bitter taste found in green vegetables and only some people have the gene that means they are able to taste it. During the day we were analysing samples of our own DNA using lots of exciting equipment and some complicated sounding techniques like “the polymerase chain reaction”, “restriction digestion” and “gel electrophoresis” which we learnt loads about throughout the day. At the end of the day’s session we donned some futuristic looking orange glasses to look at the results of our work. They showed whether we had the gene to taste the PCT chemical or not, finally giving some people an excuse not to eat Brussels sprouts!
