Headteacher

Well three days gone, the summer hols are well and truly over and this my first blog of the new school year.
Despite a superb holiday visiting my youngest son in Thailand I am pleased to get started and it has been great seeing all the staff and students especially those new to the school. A particularly warm welcome to new members of our staff team – Eve Shilton, Vicky Hepworth and Stewart McGill all working in Maths; Dave Mulvaney Assistant Area Leader in Science and Gaynor Mairs and Laura Slater who both join our team of support professionals.
The start of term has gone well and today we begin our timetabled lessons. Hopefully we will get into the routine quickly but it will, in reality, take another week or so I suspect.
I have been delighted over the events of the summer. Our exam results were very good. I am really delighted (and relieved) at the way they have turned out.  This is the product of a good deal of hard work from students, staff and, I suspect, families as well. Many thanks to you all
A great deal of decoration and refurbishment has taken place in and around the building as part of the PFI contract but I do have to say that the site staff have worked very hard over the break to get the building looking so good.

Year 8 Options Information Evening

optionsI would like to invite you to our Y8 options information evening on Thursday 8th July between 6:30pm and 7:30pm.  This event will give you an outline of the different qualifications that are available, ranging from GCSEs to BTEC’s and Diplomas alongside lots of other vocational qualifications for your son/daughter to choose from at Key Stage 4.

In January of Year 9, students will have to decide what options to take at Key Stage 4 and students are placed into pathways based on their performance during Key Stage 3 and our knowledge of how your son/daughter works best.  These different routes help to make sure that our students are given the very best opportunities to achieve success.  During the evening I will provide you with information about the different pathways available and which one seems the most appropriate for your child at the present time.

You will also receive an outline of the important dates and assessment periods during Year 9.  Students will start their GCSEs in some subjects next year and will also have some external modular exams and controlled assessments to complete.  You can help them prepare for these and we can give you plenty of advice and guidance on how to do this.

Your son/daughter is more than welcome to attend with you although this isn’t necessary as they will receive this information through assemblies and our Enrichment days.  The first part of the evening will be a short talk, which will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to speak to staff and some Year 10 students individually about the different courses available.

I look forward to seeing you on the 8th July but if you cannot make it on that date I will ensure the information goes on our website so please check www.ralphthoresby.com after this date.  If I can be of any further assistance please don’t hesitate to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
