Headteacher

Well three days gone, the summer hols are well and truly over and this my first blog of the new school year.
Despite a superb holiday visiting my youngest son in Thailand I am pleased to get started and it has been great seeing all the staff and students especially those new to the school. A particularly warm welcome to new members of our staff team – Eve Shilton, Vicky Hepworth and Stewart McGill all working in Maths; Dave Mulvaney Assistant Area Leader in Science and Gaynor Mairs and Laura Slater who both join our team of support professionals.
The start of term has gone well and today we begin our timetabled lessons. Hopefully we will get into the routine quickly but it will, in reality, take another week or so I suspect.
I have been delighted over the events of the summer. Our exam results were very good. I am really delighted (and relieved) at the way they have turned out.  This is the product of a good deal of hard work from students, staff and, I suspect, families as well. Many thanks to you all
A great deal of decoration and refurbishment has taken place in and around the building as part of the PFI contract but I do have to say that the site staff have worked very hard over the break to get the building looking so good.

stripping_seed_2Marg and I visited the Ekwendeni school in Malawi in April 2007.  It had
been started 2 years earlier by a local church.  Though we knew that
Malawi is one of the world's poorest countries, we were still amazed at
the poor facilities at the school - and yet kids, many of them orphans,
were queuing at the gates hoping to be allowed in!

golfWith only one more golf lesson to go, I feel its important to thank Paul O’Donnell at Cookridge Hall golf club for all his hard work. The funding which has helped to give professional coaching to many budding golfers is sadly coming to an end. The money has been put to very good use, providing the students with quality coaching, competitions and membership for all who took part over this last 10 months.

HatiYou will no doubt be aware of the terrible earthquake that has affected the island of Haiti. Like me I am sure you will have been moved by the utter desperation that exists.  I would like the school to try and raise funds to contribute to the aid effort. If you would like to help us please give your son or daughter a little extra money so that they can make a contribution during the course of next week. I will ask Heads of Year to talk to their groups in assemblies and I will arrange for the collection of donations.
