Last term A level and GCSE students got the opportunity to study Indonesian music with proffessionals from 'Art Forms'. The students spent the day with specialists in music from Bali and Java, trying to understand how other cultures use music as the centre of their community life. The main piece they studied is one of the A level set works called 'Baris Melampahan' and is played by a 'Gamalan orchestra'- a massive group of instruments including gongs, metallaphones, pots and other wierd and wonderful instruments. The recording is our own students version of a simple but traditional Javanese piece based on only five notes, known as 'The skeleton'. Click here to listen to a piece recorded by the students |

On a beautiful spring day near Harrogate, James Douglas, Adam Potter, Tom Dickinson and I watched as team after team drove their opening shot down the first fairway. We had to accept that this was not going to be a walk on the park as every drive seemed to be longer and straighter than the opponent before them. The team captain James got the Ralph Thoresby’s hopes underway with a fantastic opening drive. In the following group Adam’s nerves began to show as he hit a wide shot into the trees. Several groups behind, Tom confidently drove a long and straight shot down towards the green.

Here at Ralph Thoresby school we like to think that we are inventive and imaginative. To raise money for the British Heart Foundation three students had been asked to take part in a round of golf with a twist. James Douglas (captain), Adam Potter and Tom Dickinson had to attempt to play the first seven holes at Cookridge Hall Golf Club in only 30 minutes. Armed with only 3 or 4 clubs each, they sprinted down the first.

I spend a good six months looking forward to bombing down a hill on a plank of fiberglass and other materials to have it end in the blink of an eye. But what a trip. The staff enjoy it, the kids loved it and big thanks from all of us to Mr M.Gill for organising it.

Just a quick email to keep you up to date with how we are doing. The coach we had was very nice, leather seats, air con, and seats which actually get wider. The crossing was as flat as a hedgehog on the M1. We made great time being the first coach to turn up at the resort in Aosta. It snowed as we came out of the Mont Blanc tunnel but Aosta is dry which is a good job because most of the children have only brought beach clothing. In one of the girls rooms they have 23 pairs of shoes between 3 of them. The forecast for the week is good with cold crisp weather and more snow due. The kids are ready to ski and board after a lazy day which was needed after the lack of sleep we had on the overnight trip.
