There has been more great news for Ralph Thoresby’s thriving Sixth Form after it was announced that Year 12 students, Jamil Khwarazmi and Kyle Mcenery, beat off stiff competition to secure a place at Oxford University’s prestigious summer school.

Many thousands of students apply for just a handful of places on the 36 courses, which run over 5 weeks.

Jamil will join around a dozen other talented scientists on the university’s ‘Engineering Science’ week. Last year, more than 70 people applied for each place on this particular course, evidencing the very high level of competition Jamil overcame.

Kyle will continue to pursue his interest in medicine by spending time with professors who specialise in oncology. Over 150 students applied for the eight available spaces.

During the week, both students will take part in daily lectures. Jamil will prototype and subsequently build a solution to an engineering problem, whilst Kyle will spend time in both the hospital and specialised laboratories alongside the most cutting-edge research. Working with some of the world’s best academics, participants on the programme will find out more about the exceptional opportunities open to Oxford undergraduates.

Additionally, the programme will give both students access to both state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and the famous Bodleian ‘print library’.

A key aim from the programme is to emulate life at a ‘World Top 5’ university and a varied programme will provide a splendid array of opportunities. As well as an exciting selection of social activities each evening, there will be the chance to take part in a ‘tutorial’ and receive specific feedback on an area of research interest. The week will end with a ‘formal hall’ banquet and a famous Oxford ‘bop’.’

Assistant Headteacher, Stewart McGill, is delighted that our students are amongst the only young people in the city to be granted this opportunity. He added, ‘Ralph Thoresby Sixth Form seeks to find fantastic opportunities for all of its students. For both Jamil and Kyle, this will provide such an insight into a very specific Higher Education format.

‘We are proud to be supporting our learners in taking bold steps into securing exciting futures. This is just another example of the innovation and commitment to success that lies at the heart of Ralph Thoresby’s Sixth Form’.
