It’s more great news for thirteen of Ralph Thoresby’s talented Year 12 students, who have received confirmation that they have been selected for the prestigious ‘Realising Opportunities’ programme.

The national scheme, now in its seventh year, provides a handful of students from across the country to engage with 15 of the best UK universities, including Manchester, Bristol, UCL and King’s College London.

The students will be guided through the rigorous academic programme by an e-mentor (a current undergraduate student) and will be assigned a professor at Leeds University, who will support them in completing a formal assignment on a topic that interests them for their future studies. Students will also gain an insight into key university skills, including Harvard referencing and the use of electronic journals.

As part of the programme, students will attend a national launch event at the University of Leeds. Additionally, they will all have the chance to attend an all-expenses paid summer school at one of the 15 universities.

Each of the 15 universities contribute financially and this enables students to receive free travel to attend any of the 400 planned events at the participating institutions over the next two years. These will focus on all of the subject choices as well as an extensive personal skill and development programme.

Most importantly, every student will receive a guaranteed 2 grade reduction for UCAS applications to any of the participating Higher Education providers.

Assistant Headteacher, Stewart McGill, comments, ‘This is another fantastic opportunity for Sixth Formers at Ralph Thoresby. Whilst this is the first time we have participated, it’s exciting to be forging even better relationships with the best universities across the country.

‘Ralph Thoresby staff are working hard to give every student the opportunities to excel both now and in their futures. Realising Opportunities will help our young people to strive for even better academic outcomes.’
