Modern Foreign Languages

The MFL department at Ralph Thoresby consists of 4 members of staff; we also have 2 foreign language assistants who carry out speaking practice with small groups of students. We have three dedicated languages classrooms and a smaller room which is used by the assistants.

All year 7 students are taught French or German, developing their language skills in the areas of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing as well as grammar. In years 8 all students continue with their study of French or German, with some students taking up the other language as an additional foreign language. In year 9 students can opt to study French, German or Spanish for GCSE. French is also offered as an A level.

Links to SMSC and British Values

Through their MFL lessons, students will learn about cultural aspects of the countries in which the language is spoken. Topics such as health, rights and responsibilities, global and environmental issues enable students to express their views and opinions in the target language.
